Oaklea Dartmouth – Photographing a South Devon Airbnb

Photographing holiday accommodation is about more than making rooms look bright and tidy. The real challenge is helping someone understand what it might feel like to stay there.

That was my approach when I photographed the Studio at Oaklea, a self-contained rural retreat set among the Devon hills just outside Dartmouth. With its own entrance, private parking, countryside views and easy access to the coast, the property offers a quiet base for couples exploring South Devon. Before arriving with the camera, I wanted to understand what made Oaklea different from the many other holiday lets competing for attention around Dartmouth. It wasn’t simply the bedroom, kitchen or outdoor seating area. The appeal came from the combination of privacy, comfort and location: close enough to enjoy Dartmouth and the surrounding coastline, but removed from the noise and activity of the town.

That balance became the basis of the photography.

Inside, I concentrated on showing how the rooms connected and how the accommodation would actually be used. The main living space includes the kitchen and dining area, while the bright bedroom features a super-king-size bed. Rather than exaggerating the size of the rooms with overly wide angles, I wanted the photographs to feel inviting while still giving prospective guests an honest understanding of the property.

Small details played an important part. Fresh bedding, carefully presented surfaces and natural light helped create a sense of calm, but the images also needed to communicate the practical side of the stay. The private entrance, parking immediately outside and dedicated outdoor seating area all add value for guests, so they deserved to be included in the wider visual story.

I always approach Airbnb and holiday-let photography from the guest’s point of view. Someone browsing accommodation online is not simply comparing bedrooms and bathrooms. They are imagining slow breakfasts, quiet evenings and the places they might explore during their stay. The photographs need to help that process without making the property feel artificial or over-styled.

For Oaklea, the surrounding area was therefore just as important as the interior. Dartmouth, the River Dart, the South Devon countryside and nearby beaches all contribute to the experience being offered. Photographing a holiday property properly means finding a balance between documenting the accommodation and showing the lifestyle connected to it.

The finished collection was created for use across the Airbnb listing, website, social media and wider holiday-let marketing. By capturing a varied mixture of interiors, exterior views, practical features and smaller details, the owners gained a flexible image library rather than a simple record of the rooms.

This project was a good reminder that effective property photography does not need to feel extravagant. Oaklea’s appeal lies in its quiet setting, its comfort and its proximity to Dartmouth and the South Devon coast. My job was simply to communicate those qualities honestly and make the experience easier for prospective guests to picture.
